Behavior
A pelagic shoaling fish, usually staying near the surface. Overwinters in deeper water, migrating close to shore in spring at 11-14°C. Has no swim bladder and must swim continuously.
Features
Torpedo-shaped body, blue-black back with dark bars, silvery belly. Usually 30-50 cm long.
Distribution
Found in the northeast Atlantic, North Sea, Mediterranean, and parts of the Black Sea. Common in the German North Sea, and regularly appears in the southern Baltic too.
