Behavior

A bottom-dwelling fish preferring water temperatures of 2-10°C. Undertakes long migrations between spawning, feeding, and overwintering grounds, sometimes over 1000 km.

Features

Up to 160 cm long, over 40 kg. A single barbel on the chin. Colour varies with environment (brown-red, green, or grey-white). Can live up to 25 years.

Distribution

Found across the North Atlantic. In Germany, the North Sea population is called "Kabeljau" and the Baltic population "Dorsch".
