Behavior

A classic oceanic shoaling fish, forming schools of up to millions of individuals. Shows seasonal migrations, staying as deep as 250 m by day and rising closer to the surface at night.

Features

Slender body, blue-green back, silvery flanks and belly. Usually 20-40 cm long. Feeds on zooplankton.

Distribution

Found across the North Atlantic, from Norway to Greenland and the US East Coast. In Germany mainly in the North Sea and Baltic Sea.
