Behavior
Lives in low-salinity brackish water (<2‰) and freshwater, from large rivers to small rapids, preferring densely vegetated or structurally complex habitats. First breeds at 2 years old, spawning from April to June; females can spawn multiple times per season, with males guarding the eggs until hatching.
Features
Native to the Sea of Marmara, Black Sea, and Caspian Sea basins. A highly adaptable bottom-dwelling species.
Distribution
Native to the Black Sea region. Has rapidly spread upstream along the Danube. Recorded in the Rhine near Rees, Germany in 2010. Has also colonized the Vistula, Danube, and other European river systems.
