Behavior

Lives mainly in fast-flowing coastal streams, rivers, and inland lakes with stony substrate. Feeds on bottom-dwelling invertebrates. Can move down to estuaries and tolerate brackish water. Females spawn once a year.

Also known as the Baltic bullhead.

Distribution

Found in the Black Sea basin (Dniester) and southern Baltic basin (Oder, Vistula). In Germany found only in two small waterways in Brandenburg, the Schwärze and Nonnenfließ. Listed as "Least Concern" on Germany's Red List, but considered "very rare" due to its extremely narrow range.
