Behavior

Prefers still or slow-flowing, shallow waters with muddy bottoms and dense vegetation. Mainly a nocturnal hunter.

Features

Scaleless, spindle-shaped body. Eight barbels around the mouth (four upper, four lower). First ray of dorsal and pectoral fins hardened into a spine. An adipose fin sits before the caudal peduncle. Up to 40 cm long.

Distribution

Native to North America. Now classified as an invasive species in Germany, especially widespread in warm still and slow-flowing waters.
