Behavior
A diurnal opportunistic predator, most active at dawn and dusk. Juveniles shoal in open water; adults live in plant-rich still and slow-flowing areas.
Features
Dark vertical bars along the flank; the hard spines of the dorsal fin are mildly venomous. Highly adaptable, quick to colonize newly formed waters.
Distribution
Found across Eurasia, from European lakes and rivers to the brackish Baltic Sea. Very common in Germany and a standard species in fishing licence exams.
