A purely freshwater, resident river fish living on the bottom of deep, fast-flowing stretches of large rivers, feeding on aquatic insects and molluscs.
Features
The smallest sturgeon species, dark greyish-brown back, yellowish-white belly. Listed by the IUCN as Endangered.
Distribution
Native to Eurasian rivers draining into the Black Sea, Caspian Sea, and Siberia. In Germany found in the Danube basin, with successful captive breeding.
