Behavior
A bottom-dwelling fish living on sand or gravel substrates of rivers and lakes. Nocturnal, feeding on insect larvae and other bottom-dwelling invertebrates.
Features
Elongated, near-cylindrical body, downward-facing mouth with a pair of barbels. Yellow-brown with irregular markings. Small, usually under 15 cm.
Distribution
Widespread across Europe. In Germany found in rivers, streams, and lakes in every state.
