Behavior
Lives in the mid-water of clear, fast-flowing upper river reaches. A shoaling fish feeding on plankton and aquatic insects.
Features
Laterally compressed, silvery, with two black stripes along the flank. Small, usually under 15 cm. An indicator species for good water quality.
Distribution
Found in most river systems of central and eastern Europe. In Germany in clear stretches of the Danube and Rhine.
