Behavior
Lives in small water bodies and shallow areas. Juveniles feed on zooplankton, adults on small fish and crustaceans. Overwinters in groups.
Features
Small, with a silvery stripe along the flank. German populations have declined sharply since 2010 due to invasive species and viral disease, and the species is now considered threatened.
Distribution
Found across Europe and Asia, from the lower Rhine and northern Germany east to the southern Baltic basin. In Germany mainly in the north and east.
