Behavior

Lives in bottom and mid-water layers of large, slow-flowing lower river reaches. Shows anadromous migratory behaviour; some populations also live in brackish estuaries and large lakes.

Features

Dark blue-green back, silvery flanks. Yellow eyes, pectoral and pelvic fins reddish-yellow at the base, becoming more vivid during the breeding season. Up to 50 cm long.

Distribution

Found across Eurasia. In Germany mainly in the Danube and Elbe.
