A shoaling fish living near the bottom in faster-flowing river reaches. Feeds on algae and bottom-dwelling organisms.
Features
Blunt, downward-facing, transverse mouth with a sharp horny edge on the lower jaw, suited to scraping algae off rocks. Laterally compressed, spindle-shaped body.
Distribution
Found in rivers of central and southern Europe. In Germany mainly in the Danube and Rhine.
