Behavior
Lives mainly in slow-flowing rivers and shallow lake margins. Juveniles shoal, adults are usually solitary.
Features
Elongated, laterally compressed body. Spawns from May to September, with females laying eggs over gravel in fast-flowing water. Broad diet including crustaceans and small fish.
Distribution
Found across most of Europe. Common in Germany in the middle and lower reaches of rivers and shallow lake areas.
