Behavior
A cold-water fish, mostly living in slow-flowing rivers and clear lakes. Juveniles shoal, adults tend to be solitary.
Features
Slender, sturdy body, blue-grey to blackish, flanks and belly silvery. About 30-50 cm long. There is a golden ornamental form, the golden orfe.
Distribution
Widespread in northern Europe and western Siberia. In Germany mainly in large lowland rivers and nutrient-rich lakes of the north and east.
