Behavior
Mostly live in the bottom or mid-water layers of lakes, feeding on plankton and small insects. Many species have extremely narrow ranges - often a single lake - and are threatened by environmental change.
Features
Usually spindle-shaped or laterally compressed, silvery in colour. A highly diverse group with large differences in size between species.
Distribution
An important part of Germany's lake ecosystems. Many species are endemic to a single lake, e.g. Coregonus hoferi found only in Lake Chiemsee, C. holsata only in Lake Schaal (Schleswig-Holstein), C. macrophthalmus in Lake Constance, and C. bavaricus only in Lake Ammersee.
