Lives solitarily in deep, fast-flowing, oxygen-rich stretches of river. A fierce predator: juveniles eat invertebrates, adults mainly prey on other fish.
Features
One of Europe's largest native freshwater fish. Elongated body, up to 1.5 m and 50 kg. Also known as the "Danube salmon".
Distribution
Native to the Danube basin. In Germany restricted to the Danube and its tributaries in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, with sharply declining populations. Named Bavaria's "Fish of the Year 2025".
